Media Review Reasoning

It has often been mused that writing is the key to proper thinking. Media, whether fiction or non-fiction, tends to prompt introspection and analysis. Failure to write about, or at the very least mentally categorise, media consumption feels almost a waste.

Reviewing also creates something that you can point to when friends ask, ‘Should I watch X?’ and something tangible to walk away with and reference back to.

Star Scale

Condensing opinions on anything down into a five-point scale is always going to leave a lot to be desired. Media has nuance, and that simply can’t be captured in a numerical value. Any ranking system inevitably oversimplifies and distorts reality. Where possible, I prefer to explain my opinions – though that isn’t always possible.

I struggle to define anything as ‘five stars’. To me, five out of five would constitute perfection, though it’s obvious from even a fleeting glance of a critic’s output that the ends of the scale aren’t absolutes.

There is the case that some aspects can be bad, and others good. How does one take these values and condense them into a single representative? Are these values equal? If not, how do we determine their weights? Does the good of one value necessarily override the bad of another?

That isn’t to say the system is completely useless. The extremes have value. If universally assigned a single star, it’s a fair call to assume that something is crap and the opposite when all five are present – assuming you trust your reviewers and value their appraisal.

It’s also very much an accepted and widely used scale. Many review aggregate compendiums employ the system, which means that it’s hard to reap the benefits of their recommendation algorithms if you fail to comply with it. To review something and not be able to at least offer a placement somewhere on the sacred five-point scale is sacrilege, so you best have some placement.

That in mind, I don’t think the system is necessarily entirely clear. Is my one star the same as the next person’s? Thus, for the sake of clarity, my star scale ranks as such:

  1. One Star (★☆☆☆☆)
    I hate this. I personally discourage people from consuming it, and it is plagued by major flaws and shortcomings that ruin it. For a work of fiction, this might mean a gaping plot hole, atrocious writing, or a completely unengaging narrative. For non-fiction, this could indicate poorly researched arguments, biased or misleading information, or a complete lack of coherent insights.

  2. Two Stars (★★☆☆☆)
    I did not enjoy this and would not recommend it to anyone in totality. It has some major flaws but might still have some redeemable features. In fiction, perhaps there’s a glimmer of potential or a single interesting element. In non-fiction, there might be a few interesting facts or partial insights, but overall it fails to deliver its core promise.

  3. Three Stars (★★★☆☆)
    This was fine. Perhaps I’m not the right audience for this, or I am, and it had flaws that annoyed me. For fiction, it could be a good story that just missed the landing or had some significant issues. For non-fiction, it might provide some valuable information but lack depth, originality, or comprehensive analysis. Lots of works tend to fall here; this could definitely be something I’d recommend to someone else, but not without reason or specific caveats.

  4. Four Stars (★★★★☆)
    This was good! I really enjoyed this and am likely to recommend it to others, especially if it’s a topic/genre I know they like. In fiction, the narrative, characters, or world-building are compelling. For non-fiction, the arguments are well-researched, insights are valuable, and the presentation is engaging. It may still have some flaws, but they’re generally subtle enough to have negligible impact. The strengths far outweigh most criticisms.

  5. Five Stars (★★★★★)
    This was fantastic! I’m inclined to recommend it and ensure I have a personal copy so I can revisit or re-experience it 1. For fiction, this means an extraordinary narrative that is brilliantly crafted, with memorable characters and profound themes. In non-fiction, it represents a groundbreaking work that offers revolutionary insights, is meticulously researched, and/or transforms understanding of its subject. It’s near perfect, deeply impactful, and sets a high standard for its medium and genre. Chances are it has sat in the back of my mind, continuing to provoke thought and discussion.

Half stars obviously indicate an increment between each value, though they complicate things to a scale of ten rather than a scale of five. I opt to work within the totalities of the five-star system as much as possible, with only edge cases requiring a half rating.

Binary Ratings

Binary rating systems are presented in a myriad of ways. Most commonly as thumbs-up and thumbs-down, though also as up-vote and down-vote, plus and minus, smiley-face and sad-face, etc. It also sometimes presents in a slightly altered form where there is no negative, and the rating is either positive or non-existent. In this case, it is often ambiguous as to whether not marking as positive is negative, a soft negative, neutral, or interpreted some other way.

It is hard enough to condense an entire experience to fit the five-star system; to ask one to convey their feelings about an entire piece of media in a binary system is incredibly difficult.

Binary rating systems are common on streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and YouTube. These services aren’t using these ratings for public presentation of one’s likes, but instead for analytics and tailoring of content suggestions. This prompts different consideration. Not as good/bad, but rather show more/less.

This system also applies to social media content ratings, although many of those ratings are more public. This falls into the previous good/bad rating system, muddying the waters somewhat.

As an example, I very much enjoyed watching the first five seasons of the television show Dexter – to employ the star scale, they’d sit at a four – but felt there was a sharp decline in quality in the last three seasons, which would earn them a one or two on the star scale.

When evaluating the show, I’m doing so as a whole. The first five seasons are still good enough that I’d rate Dexter with a positive evaluation, but to my mind, that positive evaluation is not equal to the one I would have given the show had it not had the poor final seasons. The issue boils down to this: all positive ratings are positive, but some positive ratings are more positive than others.

If I bother to rate a piece of media in a way that only permits a binary input, I generally consider the five-star system. If a piece of media is above two-and-a-half stars, it receives a positive; otherwise, it receives a negative. I do deviate slightly from this if I’m aware my rating will influence my content suggestions in ways I don’t intend. For example, I may choose not to rate a film even if I place it above two-and-a-half stars if I don’t wish to be recommended more like it.
